This year marks 75 years since the Allied Victory in Europe!
To celebrate such a momentous day, Nelson’s Distillery & School has brought out its very own VE Day Charity Gin. Profits from this bottle will be donated to The Royal Navy Association and Care after Combat, with whom Nelson’s have close ties with.
Not normally known for its love of gin (most think of Rum when referring to the Navy), gin was actually a highly important commodity on board Royal Navy Ships.
For over 200 years, no ship of the Royal Navy left port without its complement of Navy Strength Gin aboard.
The British Navy would take Gin on board their ships as it was understood to protect them from illness encountered along the way.
The gimlet was invented by a doctor in the Royal Navy to ward off scurvy – a simple drink: gin to fortify and Roses Lime cordial to immunize.
However, gin had to be a certain ABV to be allowed onboard. If a ship encountered bad weather, gin had to be strong enough that if it accidentally spilt over gunpowder, the gunpowder would still combust.
If the gin was too low an ABV, the gunpowder would not explode rendering the ship defenceless!
So the British Navy worked out that if your gin has a given quantity of alcohol or above, the gunpowder still explodes – Navy Strength Gin.
Proof 100% = 57% ABV.
This Charity Gin may not be the usual Navy Strength traditional sailors are used to but it’s still got all the punch and flavor of one. Containing Nelson’s secret blend of 27 botanicals from across the globe, this London Dry sees hints of lemongrass and kaffir lime leaves from Thailand, vanilla from Madagascar and cinnamon from Sri Lanka. This gin offers a clean crisp taste which at the same time is deeply complex and works perfectly in a gimlet.
This is our way of giving to those who have given up so much for us.
Another effort we’ve recently launched to thank our brave front liners and personal heroes is our Reward A Hero Campaign!
